BAPTISM

In preparation for your baptism please note that a credible testimony of becoming a follower of Jesus will be required and it must be given to either one of our elders or one of our pastors.  Beyond that please take a few minutes to work your way through this little bible study on Baptism.    Once you have finished this little study please contact our church office to set up an appointment to meet and go over it.   Understanding Baptism Why be baptized?   1 Christ Demonstrated it. Then one day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John there in the Jordan River. (Mark 1:9)   2 Christ Commanded it. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And Surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the ages.”  (Matthew 28:18-20)   3 It shows you are a Believer. Many of the Corinthians who heard Him believed and were baptized. (Acts 18:8)   4 Obeying Christ’s command shows you Know him. We know that we have come to know Him, if we obey His commands. (1 John 2:3)   What is the meaning of baptism?   1 It is Identifying yourself with Christ’s burial and resurrection. For you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ. (Colossian 2:12)   2 It is a symbol of your new life as a new creation. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17) We were therefore buried with (Christ) through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead…. We too may live a new life. (Romans 6:4)   Baptism does not make you a Christian. Baptism is like a wedding ring – it’s an outward symbol of an inward commitment to follow Christ as your Lord and Saviour.   Who should be baptized?   1 Every person who has made the decision to believe in Christ. Those who believed and accepted His message were baptized. (Acts 2:41) But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News... in the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized; both men and women. (Acts 8:12)  Simon himself believed and was baptized (Acts 8:13)   2 The one requirement for baptism is belief in Christ!   We baptize children once they are old enough to understand and believe and have parental support.   When are we to be baptized?      1 As soon as you have believed!! You should not delay. Those who believed…were baptized...that day. (Acts 2:41) the Eunuch said ’Look here is water! Why shouldn’t I be baptized right now?’ (Acts 8:36—39)   Extra Reading: Matthew 3:13-17 Romans 6:1-4
